Did you know that getting a good night's sleep can mean a healthy life?
It really can improve your life in so many great ways. But why is sleeping so elusive to some? One reason is light. There is just too much light in the bedroom. Many sleep with the TV on as this seems to comfort them. Light can seep in the windows from streetlights, security lights, alarm systems, media equipment. The biggest culprit however is from our devices. They emit a harmful blue light that can cause our bodies to remain in a state of heightened awareness.
According to a recent study from Northwestern University published in March 2022, sleeping in a darkened room may protect your health from heart disease, diabetes, and stroke. Sleeping with the lights on basically sends the body into a high alert state. The article states that a single night spent in a moderately lit room can increase risk factors to serious diseases. None of these things is desirable! But with some simple lifestyle changes you can be a better version of yourself.
Blackout Shades and Curtains
How can blackout shades or blackout curtains remedy the light control issue? In the video featured below we have installed a Hunter Douglas Duette Blackout shade with LightLock. Just what does all that mean? Well, a Duette shade is a honeycomb shade that can be ordered in a black out material. LightLock is a type of frame with channels which the Duette shade fits into. There are grooves in each channel frame which prevents the light from entering. It is quite ingenious! Are you ready for a good night's sleep?
Welcome the Dark Side
To sum up what can be done to darken a room:
If you absolutely need a light on during the night, use a dim night light and place it close to the floor.
Use red/orange light and avoid white or blue light. Also keep it far from the sleeping person.
Consider eliminating all harmful light with blackout curtains or shades. To take it a step further and eliminate the light that usually filters in around the shades, use a product like LightLock to get the best results.
Here's a simple test: Look around your bedroom tonight. Is there too much light? Ask yourself, "Will I sleep better if my room were darker?" chances are your room is too light. Trust your instincts and save your life.
